Follow Caligula as he kills his wily adoptive grandfather and takes control of the decadent Roman Empire, descending into depravity, destruction and madness. The film is a reimagining of Caligula (1979) based on 96 Hours of Never Before.
Under the supervision of historian Thomas Negovan, the "Ultimate Cut" from the film was created
Instead of expanding existing scenes with the new footage, the entire film was edited from scratch, resulting in a version that does not contain a single shot of the theatrical version. Visual effects were used to enhance scenes and replace cheap sets and backdrops, and AI technology was used to restore previously unusable dialogue plagued by background noise.

In contrast to the publicly available ballet music, a new sheet music score was also composed. Originally scheduled for a limited theatrical release in late 2020, this version premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Modernized, polished and enhanced with CGI effects just to make it more relevant to modern times. Also interesting is that Gore Vidal’s original screenplay was followed during editing this time, unlike the director and protagonist Malcolm McDowell, who is known to not care much, while the original film deserved top marks, this production fell a bit short on the overall impression and in terms of the choice of shots, which is not surprising, since the original shots were allegedly not used.
Nor can McDowell’s masterful acting be overstated once, even compared to John Hurt’s inspired interpretation from the 1973 BBC series I, Claudius that preceded this film
Don’t blame the author of the text for not checking it out right away before watching the original version a second time, it takes some time to digest this achievement because it really takes your breath away.
