"Anu", on the other hand, has a different emotional problem
The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. "Prabha" (Kani Kusruti) is a nurse in a busy Mumbai hospital who shares her tiny apartment with the plain-skinned "Anu" (Divya Prabha). We soon learn that she is married, but her husband left her for a job in Germany some time ago and she hasn’t heard from him in over a year.
Their threats have given way to more practical action, as her electricity has been cut off
She has fallen in love with a young Muslim man, "Shia" (Hridhu Haroon), but knows full well that neither her colleagues nor her family would ever allow such a relationship, let alone any marriages – so perhaps running away is their only solution. Meanwhile, while these women deal with their domestic problems, their friend “Parvaty” (Chhaya Kadam) is facing eviction from her home because the developers want to move in. With this in mind, she decides it’s time to return to her village by the ocean, where at least she has a home of her own.
It’s a delicately told story set amidst the never-ending hustle and bustle of the city
Sympathizing with her plight, the two friends agree to accompany her, and through conversations and reminiscences, we discover a little bit about how each woman got to where she is now, and what possibilities might arise for their futures. These women are constantly looking out for others, but they slowly realize that they also need to start looking out for themselves more – and Prabha; who has been given the kind of "Dr. Manoj" (Azees Nedumangad) she must decide whether to stay true to her past or see what might lie ahead.
It can also be a lot of fun at times, as these women are not characters of sackcloth and ashes, but it’s still a strong message that makes for an engaging and character-driven study that’s worth a few hours
There are solid photographs throughout, capturing both the lively (and often rainy) hustle and bustle of the city, the beauty of the water, and the ancient peaceful symbolism carved into the caves, and the whole point of the story is to powerfully illustrate the choices (or lack thereof) these women can make in a society where conformity is paramount.
