Adapted from Marcel Rubens Paiva’s novel “I’m Still Here”; in fact, it improves on the book by focusing on the Paiva family and how each member is terrified and devastated by the disappearance of their father (played with deep love by Selton Mellon). Based on a strong performance by Fernando Torres as the matriarch Eunice, the film tells the horrors of the Brazilian dictatorship without being preachy or cruel.
In a masterpiece, he is engaging and moving without ever being melodramatic
The script becomes even more powerful by focusing on the human aspects and the sense of loss of those who never received or responded to the disappearance of their loved ones. The performances of the young actors are all top-notch – a rare feat in Brazilian cinema – but it is Fernando Torres’ incredibly restrained performance that really sticks out.
"I’m Still Here" is a film to cherish and keep
This is the best Brazilian film in years, a gift from director Walter Salles (Central Station). Note the brief but powerful cameo by Fernando Montenegro (Oscar nominee Central Station) at the very end.
