Throughout the film, there are numerous moments where hand movements jump between cuts
Tale
The city of New Rome is pitted against the duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who espouses a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her beloved. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Preproduction finally began in 2001 after filming 30 hours of second-unit footage and holding a roundtable reading with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was abandoned after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicted” the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin developing it again until 2019.

My CommitmentWritten by Grace VanderWaalPerformed by Grace VanderWaalCourtesy of Columbia RecordsBy arrangement with Sony Music EntertainmentProduced and orchestrated by Kris Kukul. Dark Feelings. Megalopolis is an epic and wacky mashup of different movies (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsucker Proxy and the Hollywoodland miniseries, etc.).
The movie could have been set in a more realistic place
Coppola recycles a lot of styles from some famous directors like Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. His own voice is somewhere in there in the details that unfortunately remember his weaker movies like “One from The Heart”. Then the fantasy of Megalopolis would have been more effective, giving a sense of wonder. And what is the point of stupid and unjustified theatricality or should I just say theater? Personally, I hate this kind of approach that makes me want Baz Luhrmann in my mouth.
The ending was also good
It eats away at the serious credibility of the story. Based on that point, there are a lot of free moments for no reason: dropping hats, some weird dance poses during the first scene, and the atmosphere in general. Still, I really liked the last quarter of the movie. There were some thoughtful and beautiful ideas. The story is pretty good with its ties to ancient Rome, etc.
Unfortunately, the messy and hectic nonsense of the theater just swallows up too much of it
And without that constant interference, the movie could have had a chance to be a decent adult fairy tale. Check out our list of exciting new movies from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, the New York Film Festival, and more.
